The podcast industry continues to evolve as political programming gains momentum ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Triton Digital’s Q2 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker highlights major shifts across audience reach and listener behavior.
Podcast Comedy was still the dominant category among all major podcast categories. Podcast News was the second most improved category in terms of quarterly reach growth. Another large category was the Society & Culture category.
Comedy had a 44.5% reach among the audience of podcasts in the quarter. The reach for news was at 25.7%. This was followed by society & culture at 21.2%. News experienced an 8.4% growth quarter-over-quarter. True crime saw a 1.8% gain, sports a 1.1% rise, and comedy at 2.1
“Podcasting has become the place people go for the conversation behind the headlines,” said Daryl Battaglia, SVP, Measurement Products & Strategy at Triton Digital. “Across politics, business or culture, consumers increasingly want to engage directly with hosts who offer analysis, perspective and even comic relief. That personal connection is a big part of what’s driving the movement we’re seeing across this quarter’s rankings.”
Political Podcasts Gain Momentum as Comedy Leads
The political programs have been instrumental in some of the biggest shifts in the ranking during Q2. For instance, The Rachel Maddow Show has managed to move up by 66 positions to become No. 35. The Tucker Carlson Show also made it into the top 10 list, becoming No. 9. The Diary Of A CEO by Steven Bartlett has moved up by 37 positions.
Comedy maintained its stronghold on the larger podcast market. Podcasts in the comedy category comprised 57 of the top 200 podcasts. This constituted a 29% share of the entire ranking. There was also an extension of the influence of television personalities into the audio sector. Late Night with Seth Meyers Podcast and The Late Show Pod Show with Stephen Colbert were launched in Q2. Creator-based podcasts also tapped into existing social media followers. These included HARD LAUNCH with Dan and Phil and The Really Good Podcast with Bobbi Althoff.
“With the midterm elections heating up, we expect to see a continued uptick in political and news podcasts through Q3,” said Battaglia. “Campaigns are increasing ad spend to reach voters across every medium this year, and podcasting is emerging as one of the most effective ways, as these audiences are actively seeking out long-form political conversation.”
Podcasts on politics and news received even more attention with the midterms drawing near. Several political podcasts returned to the charts this quarter. These included the Mark Levin Podcast and Breaking Points with Krystal and Saagar. The findings of the report reveal the potential of podcast ads in smaller niches. Tech, Business, Fiction, Kids & Family, and Music had impressive audience demographics.
Triton Digital leveraged Demos+ audience and behavior data to compile the report. Signal Hill Insights helped in the development of Demos+. The data provides advertisers with further knowledge regarding the nature of the audience and their intentions. With increased political interest, the podcast industry will continue to experience growth until the third quarter of the year. However, comedy and niche genres still have importance in podcast marketing and advertising.
“Smaller genres deliver hyper-concentrated purchase intent and premium audiences that are hard to find anywhere else in audio,” said Battaglia. “For advertisers chasing a specific high-value audience luxury shoppers, senior decision-makers, Gen Z, or Hispanic listeners that composition density can outperform a much larger, broader buy.”
