IAB Tech Lab, the global body setting digital advertising standards, has launched the AI Content Monetization Protocols (CoMP) Working Group. This initiative, originally known as the LLM Content Ingest API, was renamed to reflect its expanded goals. The new framework focuses on enabling publishers and content creators to monetize content effectively in the AI-driven era.
Anthony Katsur, CEO of IAB Tech Lab, explained the urgency. “The fundamentals of the open web are under pressure. Publishers face declining traffic from AI tools like overviews and chatbots. Meanwhile, brands see product data stripped of context or misrepresented. We must build the technical foundation for a better path forward.”
Framework to Protect Publishers and Enable Monetization
The AI CoMP Working Group will establish protocols to restore control and revenue for publishers in an AI-first ecosystem. Its framework highlights three priorities:
- Blocking bot traffic: Giving publishers stronger control over unauthorized scraping.
- LLM-friendly discovery: Helping publishers engage in AI experiences while building sustainable marketplaces.
- LLM Ingest API: Offering a standardized, opt-in approach for content ingestion that enables monetization.
These standards go beyond restoring lost ad revenue. They provide publishers and brands with control over how information is accessed, displayed, and monetized in AI-powered platforms. The flexible model supports pay-per-crawl, aggregation, and outcome-based monetization structures.
Shailley Singh, EVP of Product and COO at IAB Tech Lab, added, “The rise of generative AI created the Wild West for content usage. What we’re building is the zoning map. This effort protects publishers’ IP while unlocking new value.”
Open Invitation to Industry Leaders
Katsur emphasized inclusivity, noting that while major content deals exist, many mid-tier and smaller publishers lack representation. “This framework ensures everyone gets a seat at the table,” he said.
To drive adoption, IAB Tech Lab invited major AI innovators, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Meta, Perplexity, and Grok. The group also welcomes publishers, platforms, edge cloud providers, and technology firms of all sizes to participate in shaping these protocols.
With AI reshaping digital ecosystems, IAB Tech Lab’s CoMP Working Group positions itself as a cornerstone for sustainable monetization and publisher protection.
