Pinterest Expands Amazon Web Services Collaboration to Advance AI-Driven Visual Search Discovery

Pinterest Works with AWS to Power Next Chapter of AI-Driven Visual Search Discovery

Pinterest announced a massive expansion of its collaboration with Amazon Web Services. The company selected AWS as its Preferred Cloud Services Provider. This agreement includes a planned $4 billion commitment for cloud services through 2031. It marks the largest infrastructure commitment in the history of Pinterest. The historical deal accelerates the company’s AI roadmap. Furthermore, the collaboration provides a more responsive search and shopping experience. It also modernizes the global platform to scale up AI-Driven Visual Search Discovery.

Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer at Pinterest, discussed the massive investment.

“Pinterest is heavily investing in AI to make discovery more personal, visual, and actionable for the hundreds of millions of people who use our platform every month. This expanded commitment with AWS gives us the compute flexibility, hardware optionality, and infrastructure efficiency to accelerate our AI vision for the next generation of visual discovery on Pinterest. This strategic partnership will help accelerate AI innovation at Pinterest, improving both our consumer experience and advertiser performance by advancing our proprietary models and our use of open-source models.”

Scaling Infrastructure with Custom Silicon

The companies have worked together since 2010 to improve core services. They previously optimized one of the largest-scale data lakes on AWS. Now, the new agreement deepens this long-standing relationship. The expanded infrastructure supports AI model training, inference, and platform growth.

Dave Brown, SVP of Compute & ML Services at AWS, shared his insights.

“Pinterest is building some of the most advanced visual AI systems on AWS, powering discovery for more than 600 million users. As one of our longest-standing customers, we know what it takes to support that scale securely and efficiently. AWS compute and purpose-built silicon like Trainium and Graviton give Pinterest the price-performance to train and run AI models at a massive scale across both training and inference. This commitment provides Pinterest with the AI infrastructure to move faster and deliver new experiences to users sooner.”

Pinterest has long applied AI to personalization. The company uses its proprietary Taste Graph to guide users. It has evolved from embedding-based retrieval to transformer-based generative models. Recently, the platform launched Pinterest Assistant. This assistant brings multi-turn conversational discovery to users. Open-source vision-language models power this new tool.

Pinterest will now diversify its accelerated computing. The company plans to use AWS Trainium to host large language models. Additionally, the platform will expand its use of Graviton. Graviton already powers roughly a third of Pinterest’s compute infrastructure. This silicon supports discovery for more than 600 million people monthly.

Finally, Pinterest will continue modernizing its platform. The company is transitioning from traditional EC2-based environments to Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service. This migration improves developer velocity, operational reliability, and infrastructure efficiency. These investments directly strengthen the future of AI-Driven Visual Search Discovery.
