Postmedia is supporting local news by creating a new reader experience via digital means for Southwestern Ontario. This project is meant to support local journalism as well as better serve the community’s news. Postmedia has just released a new platform for its Southwestern Ontario news brands.
The four participating newspapers are Windsor Star, Chatham Daily News, London Free Press, and Exeter Lakeshore Times-Advance. The newspapers included on the newspaper website include Goderich Signal-Star, Clinton News Record, and Mitchell Advocate.
Seaforth Huron Expositor, Woodstock Sentinel-Review, St. Thomas Times-Journal, and Strathroy Age Dispatch are some other names participating in this. The improved platform improves the experience of the readers regarding accessing the information produced by these newspapers. Readers will still be able to have access to information that is reported in their newspapers. However, readers will also be able to find related information from all across the region and province. This is how Postmedia links up local, regional, and provincial journalism through the new experience.
“Our local news brands have been at the heart of communities for generations, and we believe their role has never been more important,” said Andrew MacLeod, President and Chief Executive Officer of Postmedia. “This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring these trusted publications continue to thrive by strengthening connections between readers and the journalism they rely on, while creating new opportunities for advertisers to engage with highly valued local audiences.”
Postmedia Expands Digital Access to Local News
However, each paper still preserves its individuality as a local brand. The production of this paper creates even more possibilities for digital advertising. Advertisers will have access to a targeted local audience through trustworthy news publications. The corporation intends to develop several digital advertising services. Some of those would be ad placements, local business listings, newsletter advertising, and sponsored content.
However, Postmedia has managed to revive the mastheads of the concerned newspapers. The archives inspired the restoration of the mastheads through photographs and newspaper copies. It recognizes the contribution made by newspapers that have been in operation for a long period of time.
Postmedia has already introduced the digital experience to some Canadian news sites. These sites are Montreal Gazette, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, and Regina Leader-Post. The other newspapers that offered this experience include Melfort Journal and other Ontario local/regional news outlets. Some other newspapers will join this platform in the future.
