Gannett and Perplexity Team Up for AI Content Licensing

Gannett has signed a strategic AI content licensing agreement with Perplexity, an AI-driven answer engine. This deal allows Perplexity to license content from USA TODAY and its network of over 200 local publications. As part of the partnership, Gannett becomes one of the largest U.S. media firms to join the Perplexity Publisher Program.

This AI content licensing move reflects the shift in how media leverages AI to distribute credible journalism. The collaboration allows Perplexity to integrate Gannett’s content into its AI search tools, including the new agentic browser, Comet. Currently, Comet is available to Perplexity Max and select Pro subscribers. However, it will be accessible to a wider audience starting in September.

Boosting AI Innovation and Credible Journalism

Michael Reed, Chairman and CEO of Gannett, emphasized their focus on innovation and fair compensation. “We are committed to protecting our content and earning rightful value from it. This partnership ensures attribution, revenue share, and new data insights,” he stated. Gannett aims to use this opportunity to expand AI content licensing while reinforcing its leadership in digital publishing.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas praised Gannett’s commitment to trustworthy reporting. “Gannett stands for excellent journalism. Together, we aim to reshape how AI supports media and publishing in this evolving digital era,” he said.

Additionally, Gannett will use Perplexity’s technology, including the Sonar API and Perplexity Enterprise Pro, for its internal operations. However, the financial details of the agreement remain confidential.

This strategic AI content licensing deal marks a significant step for both companies, bridging quality journalism with cutting-edge AI experiences across marketing technology platforms.
